Artist to Watch in 2020, April Edition: Laini Colman

Written by jonross in Community

Hello again everybody! This month I’m pleased to shine the spotlight on English-Australian singer-songwriter Laini Colman.

Laini has released two albums to date: the eponymous “Laini Colman” and “Take A Breath”. She’s currently working on her third record, due out by the end of 2020. Her latest single, “Tears of Ash” (which she wrote and released to raise money for the Australian bush fire crisis) is available for your listening pleasure on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/39PnFvS8TBIjnwC5jnUQeC?si=YhKSyrraSR2KUFQHf-AKQg

Laini has called several places home over the years. She was born in England and raised in Boston—Lincolnshire, England, not Massachusetts. (Still, I wonder if they have a team called the Red Sox). Anyway, she spent some time in Scotland before emigrating to Australia, where she resides today. In Tasmania, to be more specific.

Actually, she lives in Australia but doesn’t exactly live on Australia. This is because she and her husband live on a yacht.

Yep, that’s right. She lives on a boat. Pretty cool if you ask me!

As for her nationality, Laini tells me “I’ve spent nearly half my life now in Australia and feel very Australian – much more adapted to the Australian culture, people and way of life than the English and this very much feels like my place of ‘home’ if anyone asks me where I consider home to be.  However, my roots are English and I will always feel that, so like any immigrant to a country who has been there a long time I describe myself as (and consider myself) an English born Australian.”

Well, that certainly clears things up now doesn’t it! 🙂

Musically speaking, Laini had piano lessons as a child and taught herself guitar. After moving to the land down under she took some guitar lessons and, later on, began taking songwriting lessons. Then about 5 years ago, she began a collaboration with a fellow by the name of Jim Reece, and the two of them began writing and recording songs for an album. This experience provided the impetus for Laini to begin taking voice lessons, and to this day she now considers herself a singer first and foremost. She does, however, credit her guitar teacher with having the most profound impact on her, citing that if it wasn’t for those guitar lessons she probably wouldn’t be writing and recording songs today.

Her biggest influences? David Bowie and Nick Cave. As she describes: “David Bowie because he was never afraid of experimenting and re-inventing himself to find an incredibly unique sound which still appealed to the masses at the time.  Nick Cave because he absolutely doesn’t give a d*** about following trends or appealing to the masses and so gives himself the freedom to express his musical creativity and genius in whatever form stays true to himself.”

Yep, sounds pretty “indie” to me! In fact, Laini finds it tricky to describe her own musical style. She says she doesn’t confine herself to a particular genre; rather, she likes to experiment a bit. If she had to categorize herself, she would say “alternative pop/rock, dark cinematic pop, and experimental.”

Laini goes on to explain that she doesn’t necessarily see being a musician and indie artist as a career, but rather as a passion: “Like many passions, I spend more money on it than I receive, but I’m addicted to writing and recording, and I get a huge amount of satisfaction out of knowing that my music is being heard by people all over the world, and these are the reasons I devote so much of my time to it.”

“I get a huge amount of satisfaction out of knowing that my music is being heard by people all over the world, and these are the reasons I devote so much of my time to it.”

One of her proudest moments was when her song “In A Manner Of Speaking” reached 1,000 streams on Spotify. (As of this writing it has almost 2,000). You can hear it here: https://open.spotify.com/track/2AHTHlKBlJODx4oCcuCRrd?si=k05Qi74yQA-sd2PWPrkkHw

Actually, she’s garnered quite a few accolades over the years, including, but not limited to:

  • being a semi-finalist in the 2012 UK Songwriting Competition
  • placing runner-up at the 2013 Song Of The Year Contest
  • earning a spot as a finalist in the 2015 Your Music Out Loud songwriting competition

When she’s not writing or recording music, Laini enjoys going for walks with her dog, Ziggy, sailing (naturally), and grabbing a bite to eat with a close friend. She also loves fresh food, dark chocolate, coffee, tea, and red wine. In her spare time she likes watching movies.

When I asked her to provide one “takeaway” for the readers, Laini responded: “my one piece of advice would be to take care of yourself. So many musicians get burnt out through social media and online marketing (even very famous ones) and so you need to monitor and manage the time you’re putting into this, making sure that you have quality time for your music, yourself and your non-musical life.  Take time off when you need it – mental health breaks.”

I would say this is good advice for EVERYONE, not just musicians.

  • Money General Questions

  • How do I withdraw my money?

For security reason, to withdraw funds currently you will need to make a manual request.

    Notes:
1:  We aim to process all withdrawals within 24 hrs but in busy periods this may take longer.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

2: To minimise the flat fee of withdrawals via Paypal it is best to withdraw in as few transactions as possible.
We can advise further on this if required.

  • What are the fees to withdraw money/get paid?

We are currently using Paypal as our primary payment processor so our fees are directly in line with their quoted fees for business transfers.

    a) we will be adding other payment processors soon.
    b) we intend to have the lowest fees in the industry, along with the highest payments this will be good for all members.
    c) Our ambition is simple, we want to help all our members earn as much as they possibly can from their involvement in the music industry.

Note:  Payment processing fees are subject to change by Paypal and are not under our control.  We simply pass on the fees directly and do not profit from this process what so ever, in fact we personally charge nothing for our part in the process.

Our crypto currency is still in development but we can tell you it will be used to reward everyone who contributes, helps with and shares our platform.

It is meant as a reward for members. Once it is publicly tradable we will eventually allow members to withdraw their tokens at which point they can sell them or store them elsewhere if they prefer.

We will also be offering staking and rewards for those who leave their tokens in place on the platform.

Our development plans include using our crypto currency as:

    • a reward system to say thanks to all our wonderful members for everything they do
    • a member voting system giving members a much greater say in the future of the platform
    • a blockchain driven licensing system to help track and protect music sales globally

We will keep our members informed as new developments happen.

    • a reward system to say thanks to all our wonderful members for everything they do

    • a blockchain driven licensing system to use a transparent unbreakable ledger to track and protect music sales globally, within Go To Hear products and beyond them.

  • Affiliate System & Earnings

  • How do I sign others up and do I get a reward?

It’s really simple to sign others up – later on you’ll get rewarded for doing so.

Just find some content you like and promote it using the share buttons on the site.

You can use these buttons to share/promote articles, music, playlists, members etc.

    • This will create a unique link to this content which tracks who visits via this link and when they sign up.
    • Just create the link and share it anywhere – we do the rest.
    • You’ll be able to see all the things you promote and how successful they are in your dashboard

Our system automatically – protects music, tracks shares and divides affiliate rewards between the member who creates the music/content and the member who shares the content.

  • If I share/promote someone else’s content can I earn anything?

    Absolutely – yes.

If you promote someone else’s Go To Hear content (including their music, blogs/articles, member page etc.) and someone follows the link you created and then signs up you, then you will get a share of the sign up reward (see note below).

The person who created the content gets a share of the reward too.

If you share content that YOU created then you get all the reward, as you are both the creator and the sharer.

Our system rewards creators and sharers equally – so everyone wins – and everyone is rewarded for doing what they are good at.

NOTE: During our key growth phases members will earn our crypto currency (GTH) for all sign ups that are attributed to their account.
Eventually the platform will have dispensed all of it’s reward tokens, at which point future reward mechanisms may be used or we may offer affiliate rewards paid in US Dollars ($).
It is our intention that at this point our crypto voting system will enable members to vote on how the reward system evolves.  Go To Hear isn’t a platform run by oligarchs it is an eco-system designed to transition towards a blockchain protocol offering transparent decision making by it’s members.

  • Will referral/affiliate rewards be recurring?

Yes you will earn crypto affiliate rewards for any sign ups that are classed as your affiliate every month that they remain a member (terms apply, see note below).

NOTE: During our key growth phases members will earn our crypto currency (GTH) for all sign ups that are attributed to their account.

  • How do I earn affiliate rewards?

You can share anything on our platform and earn rewards, basically where ever there is a share button.

Just share content (music , articles/blogs, playlists, member pages, etc.) via these buttons and place them where ever your fans/friends/associates/followers will see them. Twitter, Facebook, your website – anywhere.

Best of all the content you share doesn’t even have to belong to you.

If someone signs up we’ll “auto-magically” split the sign-up rewards between you and the person who owns the content.  Our unique system ensures that both content creators and content sharers get rewarded.

Fair share:  If you create content (music , articles, playlists, member page) and someone else shares it and signs someone up then you get a share of the affiliate crypto rewards for doing so.

NOTE: During our key growth phases members will earn our crypto currency (GTH) for all sign ups that are attributed to their account.

    Yes.

NOTE:  If members stream your track and don’t wish to pay or don’t have any money they will only have access to a 30 second clip of your music.
We think the pressure to give music away totally undermines artist revenues.
It’s great for platforms who want to profit from artists by giving away millions of tracks for $10 per month, but we think your art is worth more than that.

  • How do I protect my tracks from piracy?

If they aren’t already a member then when they sign up as a platform member they will be attributed to you as one of your affiliates – so it’s you who makes the money not people attempting to illegally copy and use your music.

This technology is designed specifically to protect artists and other content creators to ensure that the people who create the content always get the reward for their work.
