Artist To Watch in 2020, January Edition: Tom Smith

Written by jonross in Community

Hello! My name is Jon Ross and I’m pleased to begin a residency here on gotohear.com contributing articles featuring independent artists!

Each month I will choose a different artist to highlight, and this month I had the opportunity to interview singer-songwriter and guitarist/bassist Tom Smith.

Tom has been playing music for 44 years and has released 3 albums and 35 songs. He produces music under the moniker “The Merry Jaynz” and he’s currently working on the second track in what he calls the “post-third-album era.” Recently, he won first place in a local singer-songwriter competition and was featured in the Maryville, Tennessee Daily Times newspaper some years ago.

The aforementioned 3rd album was just released last month, on December 3rd.

Originally from New York, Tom and his wife Susan currently make their home in Knoxville, Tennessee, about 3 hours east of Nashville. Prior to settling down out near the Smoky Mountains, Tom spent time in several other cities such as Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and the much smaller town of Florence, KY. He says the most interesting place he’s lived is Brooklyn, NY, because “nobody there has ever eaten a slice of Domino’s Pizza.” As a side note, being from New York, it’s no surprise that pizza is his favorite food, which he enjoys pairing with a nice pinot noir.

When asked how he got started in music, Tom recalls: “My best friend’s oldest brother left an old 1960’s electric bass guitar lying around. I learned all the major 1970s bass riffs on that before I even dreamed of having an amp or a bass of my own. Then my art teacher loaned me an acoustic guitar. I immediately removed those two annoying “extra strings” and proceeded to further my bass career on it. 18 months later I was playing gigs with my own bass and amp.”

He credits one of his high school music teachers, Dalnillo Florian, as having a profound impact on him as a musician: “This cat was a white guy who spent his twenties and thirties playing the Harlem jazz clubs in the 1940s and 1950s. He taught guitar and history. When it happened that two students wanted a bass course, he magically created a half-semester bass course for us. I thank him for teaching me chord theory. I parlayed my teeny bit of chord theory from Dal Florian into whatever I could make of it, rising meteorically to the top of the heap of local bass players my age, I wound up playing with much older, much better, much more well-educated musicians as a result.”

Tom continues to perform regularly. He plays in 3 different cover bands and a gypsy jazz band in addition to his solo acoustic act. He related to me one funny/embarrassing stage moment when he “accidentally smacked a lady in the back of the head with my Strat on stage. She was the singer and the gig was a benefit for brain cancer surgery FOR HER!” (Oops! lol)

I asked Tom if there was a defining moment for him when he knew that music was what he was destined to do, and he recounts the following: “It was a party. I was talked into accompanying my girlfriends brother to a party full of his co-workers because he wanted to bring his bass and jam with people for the first time. He wanted moral support, so I went and brought my Strat and little battery amp. When we arrived, there was a good crowd, but they were all grooving to Paul Simon’s Graceland album which had just been released. When Graceland was over, I started picking. Soon, they shut off the stereo and gathered around to watch me. One of the attendees looked like a biker. A really p***** off biker. Frowny, grinding his jaws, not associating at all. It turns out he was also a bass player. He borrowed my girlfriend’s brother’s gear and we just started wailing together for three hours non-stop. We had everyone’s undivided attention the whole time. While this was going on I intended with malice aforethought to use the music to send healing vibes to this guy, to try to get his head in a better space, lighten him up a little. When we finally took a break, he was all smiles and ran over and gave me a big hug  and thanked me profusely. I managed to convince myself that I used music to heal him. There were many other similar stories like that, but this instance stands out the most for me.”

As for musical influences, Tom cites The Grateful Dead as the biggest one: “They caused me to view music as something fluid, rather than carved in granite. Because of them, I am a musical risk-taker. I learned more from listening to Jerry Garcia’s influences than I have from listening to Garcia himself. I tend to value the effects the music I make has on its listeners more than the value it has on my bank account.” As a listener, right now his go-to jam is Derek Trucks and the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and his favorite “guilty pleasure” song is Ohio by Chrissy Hynde.

Tom describes his musical style as “underground swamp rock” which he says includes a mixture of “garage punk, reggae, rockabilly, folk, bluegrass/country, gypsy jazz and some latin.” Phew! Sounds groovy though, doesn’t it?

If he could give other artists one piece of advice that he’s learned that he wishes other people to have, he says: “The money is in the vocals. Wanna make money? Be a great singer or align yourself with one and support them (musically).”

When not playing or recording music, Tom does IT (information technology) and software work, and enjoys reading, particularly Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and Elaine Nolan, and watching the New York Jets (that’s American football for those of you not familiar).

If you’re anywhere near the Knoxville area you can catch Tom playing live solo acoustic at The Bird House on January 24th.

    General crypto details.
Our crypto currency is still in development but we can tell you it will be used to reward everyone who contributes, helps with and shares our platform.

It is meant as a reward for members. Once it is publicly tradable we will eventually allow members to withdraw their tokens at which point they can sell them or store them elsewhere if they prefer.

We will also be offering staking and rewards for those who leave their tokens in place on the platform.

Our development plans include using our crypto currency as:

    • a reward system to say thanks to all our wonderful members for everything they do
    • a member voting system giving members a much greater say in the future of the platform
    • a blockchain driven licensing system to help track and protect music sales globally

We will keep our members informed as new developments happen.

  • How do I withdraw the GTH crypto tokens I’ve earned?

Our crypto currency is still in development but we can tell you it will be used to reward everyone who contributes, helps with and shares our platform.

It is meant as a reward for members. After it becomes publicly tradable we will allow members to withdraw their tokens at which point they can sell them or store them elsewhere if they prefer.

We will also be offering staking and further rewards for those who leave their tokens in place on the platform.

Our key crypto development plans include using our crypto currency as:

    • a reward system to say thanks to all our wonderful members for everything they do
    • a member voting system giving members a much greater say in the future of the platform
    • a blockchain driven licensing system to use a transparent unbreakable ledger to track and protect music sales globally, within Go To Hear products and beyond them.

We will keep our members informed as these new developments are sent live.

  • How do I withdraw my money?

For security reason, to withdraw funds currently you will need to make a manual request.

    Notes:
1:  We aim to process all withdrawals within 24 hrs but in busy periods this may take longer.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

2: To minimise the flat fee of withdrawals via Paypal it is best to withdraw in as few transactions as possible.
We can advise further on this if required.

  • What are the fees to withdraw money/get paid?

We are currently using Paypal as our primary payment processor so our fees are directly in line with their quoted fees for business transfers.

    a) we will be adding other payment processors soon.
    b) we intend to have the lowest fees in the industry, along with the highest payments this will be good for all members.
    c) Our ambition is simple, we want to help all our members earn as much as they possibly can from their involvement in the music industry.

Note:  Payment processing fees are subject to change by Paypal and are not under our control.  We simply pass on the fees directly and do not profit from this process what so ever, in fact we personally charge nothing for our part in the process.

  • How can I see my earnings stats?

You can see details of your earnings on your dashboard

Spending can include:  Music streaming payments (all members), music purchases (all members), tips (all members).

You can also find information about the money (USD $) you’ve earned on the funds page.
You can find information about the crypto rewards (GTHC tokens) you’ve earned on the funds crypto page.

Note:  This funds page includes all the money you’ve added, your income and spending on the platform and a funds balance.

  • Affiliate System & Earnings

  • How do I sign others up and do I get a reward?

It’s really simple to sign others up – later on you’ll get rewarded for doing so.

Just find some content you like and promote it using the share buttons on the site.

You can use these buttons to share/promote articles, music, playlists, members etc.

    • This will create a unique link to this content which tracks who visits via this link and when they sign up.
    • Just create the link and share it anywhere – we do the rest.
    • You’ll be able to see all the things you promote and how successful they are in your dashboard

Our system automatically – protects music, tracks shares and divides affiliate rewards between the member who creates the music/content and the member who shares the content.

  • If I share/promote someone else’s content can I earn anything?

    Absolutely – yes.

If you promote someone else’s Go To Hear content (including their music, blogs/articles, member page etc.) and someone follows the link you created and then signs up you, then you will get a share of the sign up reward (see note below).

The person who created the content gets a share of the reward too.

If you share content that YOU created then you get all the reward, as you are both the creator and the sharer.

Our system rewards creators and sharers equally – so everyone wins – and everyone is rewarded for doing what they are good at.

NOTE: During our key growth phases members will earn our crypto currency (GTH) for all sign ups that are attributed to their account.
Eventually the platform will have dispensed all of it’s reward tokens, at which point future reward mechanisms may be used or we may offer affiliate rewards paid in US Dollars ($).
It is our intention that at this point our crypto voting system will enable members to vote on how the reward system evolves.  Go To Hear isn’t a platform run by oligarchs it is an eco-system designed to transition towards a blockchain protocol offering transparent decision making by it’s members.

  • Will referral/affiliate rewards be recurring?

Yes you will earn crypto affiliate rewards for any sign ups that are classed as your affiliate every month that they remain a member (terms apply, see note below).

  • How do I earn affiliate rewards?

You can share anything on our platform and earn rewards, basically where ever there is a share button.

Just share content (music , articles/blogs, playlists, member pages, etc.) via these buttons and place them where ever your fans/friends/associates/followers will see them. Twitter, Facebook, your website – anywhere.

Best of all the content you share doesn’t even have to belong to you.

If someone signs up we’ll “auto-magically” split the sign-up rewards between you and the person who owns the content.  Our unique system ensures that both content creators and content sharers get rewarded.

Fair share:  If you create content (music , articles, playlists, member page) and someone else shares it and signs someone up then you get a share of the affiliate crypto rewards for doing so.

NOTE: During our key growth phases members will earn our crypto currency (GTH) for all sign ups that are attributed to their account.

  • If someone shares/promotes my content do I earn anything?

    Absolutely – yes.

Our system will “auto-magically” share the rewards (see note below) with the you (the creator) and person who shared your content (the sharer).

Our system automatically tracks the shares, the sign ups and hands out the rewards – all you need to do is create great content.
Our system encourages and makes it easy for other members to share your great content to their social media channels etc.

We think the pressure to give music away totally undermines artist revenues.
It’s great for platforms who want to profit from artists by giving away millions of tracks for $10 per month, but we think your art is worth more than that.

  • How do I protect my tracks from piracy?

If they aren’t already a member then when they sign up as a platform member they will be attributed to you as one of your affiliates – so it’s you who makes the money not people attempting to illegally copy and use your music.
